Private Investigators in Singapore

There are many reasons to hire a private investigator. It can be spousal infidelity, maid indiscretion or even to find a long lost relative.

What is a Private Investigator?

A private investigator (often abbreviated to PI and informally called a private eye), a private detective or inquiry agent, is a person who can be hired by individuals or groups to undertake investigatory law services. Private detectives/investigators often work for attorneys in civil cases.

In 2011, Durex did a survey and found that 19% of men and women have been unfaithful to their spouses. In recent years, families in Singapore have hired private investigators to keep tabs on their maids. Whatever the reason, it is best to do some homework before hiring so as to get the right private investigator to do a good job for you.

In Singapore, there is the Private Security Industry Act. This act and other relevant subsidiary legislations regulate all activities pertaining to the private investigation industry. One of the requirements is that all private investigators and their agencies must be licensed. If they are not, they cannot carry on the private investigation business. To find out more about the licensing conditions, you can visit the Singapore Police Force site - click here.

There is also something called the Code of Conduct. All private investigators must adhere to this Code of Conduct. Some examples are: the private investigator must not give any false representation to any person regarding his level of training, skill or qualification as a private investigator.

There are many other certifications. It is best to ask the private investigator for these. Make sure they are credible. E.g. there is the Council of International Investigators (USA), and the World Association of Professional Investigators (UK).

Do Some Research Before Deciding

All said, it is most important that you, as a client, check the credibility of the private investigator. Besides the above points, you should also ask for track records to understand the private investigator's capabilities.
